European alternatives to U.S. digital platforms and services

Since I in the beginning of January got involved in the Danmark Skifter campaign and wrote my digital New Year’s resolution for 2026, I have switched from/to:

  • Google Mail (us) -> Proton Mail (ch)
  • Google Drive (us) -> Proton Drive (ch)
  • Google Chrome Browser (us) -> Firefox Browser (us)
  • Google Search Engine (us) -> DuckDuckGo Search Engine (us)
  • Google Translate (us) -> DeepL Translate (de)
  • ChatGPT (us) -> Mistral Le Chat (fr)

In addition, I have been exploring European alternatives to U.S. AI tools and the more advanced digital platforms and services that are essential to my professional work. For example, tools for vibe coding, such as:

  • Mistral Vibe CLI (fr)
  • Lovable Vibe Code Apps (se)

In June 2026 I finally managed to move away from Meta completely. Ever since I deleted my Facebook profile on January 1, 2025, my Instagram profile has been the very last bastion of my Meta-based online social life. That Instagram profile has now been deleted and replaced by a Pixelfed profile.

To start with, I’ve set up a profile on the server: pixelfed.social.

At the same time, I’ve come across Mastodon, which is a German alternative to X. Since profiles on Pixelfed’s and Mastodon’s servers can link to one another, this opens new possibilities that are also worth exploring.

P.S. I value my privacy and don’t miss either the digital surveillance or the third-party adverts in my feed. The difference between then and now is striking and clear.
